Hostility between Iran and the U.S. began at the moment of the Iranian Revolution in 1979, but with Operation Epic Fury it has entered a dramatic new phase. Initial American war goals concerned Iranian efforts to develop nuclear arms and its support for proxies throughout the Middle East. Now the key issue has become  control of the Straits of Hormuz. With support from Russia and China, parts of the Iranian regime are trying drive the U.S. out of the region, while Washington hopes o squeeze Tehran with sanctions and a blockade.
